Geometry & landscapes

Hello everybody! Here we have a new entry, which is the last one of my trilogy under the name "Geometry & .... ". After talking about Geometry & art, but also about Geometry & music, today we are going to describe the impact that geometry has in the landscapes around us.

As teachers, we should encourage our students to understand the reality through this geometrical perspective. Something really close to them, as it is the city, should be used as a potential resource.

Maths are around us. Angles, polyhedrons and so on are elements that we can build up in our minds. Taking a look on the different walking paths, the streets and the buildings, the pupils will be able to rediscover their city from a new perspective, the
GEOMETRICAL ONE.

In this entry, I just want to show you an evolution on the cities' construction along the history, a really interesting content that can be applied at schools to teach both social sience and history, but also mathematics.

1) The most ancient city that has ever been found is Al Rawda (Siria), from the 2600 b.C. Nowadays it is still being dug because it was totally covered by the sand. The picture shows us a representation on how the city is supossed to be and, of course, we can appreciate the impact of geometry in the distribution of it.

This tupe of city has been repeated in Mesopotamia along many years.
Examples are Hamadan and Firuzabad.

2) Talking about Greece and Rome, they really reinventated a way of distributing the cities. To the greeks, whose main important urban-planner was Hipodamos de Mileto, the grid was the perfect way of creating the cities. In rome, it was also used this plane, but they combined it with a circle shape.

3) Going through the time, we can arrive to the medieval period. As they were always in war, the distribution changed. The people lived behind the walls, being a totally disaster the organization of the city. It was a type of labyrinth where there was no geometrical order. Toledo was a great example.

4) Finally, and not spending too much time in all the eras, we have to talk about the current times. Everything changed, and everything will still be changing. However, we have cities such as Barcelona, in our country, or also examples as Paris.

TO CONCLUDEI encourage you to explain your students’ geometry, the geometrical proportions and the use of geometry in our daily life using the cities as a clear example. To do so, apart from investigating, I totally recommend you to use GoogleEarth.

Searching on the internet, there are many illustrative videos on how to create your own city through geometry. Apply it with all your students! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vafperyUBWg
