Geometry & Art
In the last entry we talked about geometry & music. Did you find it interesting? I hope so!
The following entry will show another vision of the geometry. As I told you on the introduction, I pretend to provide you with different resources and tools to work the geometry with the students in a motivating way and making it real to them, so they will be totally engaged. Can you imagine with is the area we are going to work on today?...

Geometry seen from the Artistic Expression.
From the past to our current times, mathematics and arts have been really related. The simmetry, proportions and the geometry are concepts specially important in arts. If we observe a sculpture, a draw or the architecture we can see that the artists have a mathematic view.
🔺 Do not forget that most of the important mathematicians were artists, and viceversa.
I am offering you a new possibility. Appart from studying geometry in a transdisciplinary way next to music, we can also work with Arts. Interpreting draws make students develop their visual creative thinking, a really important tool for them and, at the same time, the interiorize the concepts.

One of the most important examples of art and mathematics could be Kandinsky
I am going to propose you a suitable activity to be carried out with your students...
Activity:
- The main idea, and the starting point, will be showing the picture to the student. Through the VTS (Visual Thinking Strategy) we can promote a debate between the students to imagine what is the picture about, what elements are included and so on.
- As moderators, we have to try to conduct them to the mathematical area, where they should talk about circles, squares, the different colours and so on.
- To conclude, and as a way to work with geometrical figures, they can create their own kandinsky piece of art, following the structure. The teacher will give them a blank sheet with a chart as the following one:
In this chart, they will be able to draw geometrical figures, decorate them and we will be working geometry (maths) and art at the same time, showing them important artists.
To conclude, another important way to work with artistic elements is to relate students to their surroundings. Our city, Málaga, has lots of historical strees and monumentes where geometry could be find. Without going so far away, I show you a picture from the cathedral.
DO YOU THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA? Share your points of view on the comments and try to apply those strategies with your students.
