"Gamification" in the development of Geometry
As I
previously established on my Introductory entry, I pretend to make the readers
of this blog think on the importance of Geometry in Primary Education but,
appart from them, make you concious of the variety of ways in which we can
teach Geometry to our students.
When we
are general teachers, but specifically as Geometry teachers, we should try to
arouse our students interest, make them learn in a funny way and guarantee that
the classes are enjoyable and assure the learning process.
Considering
all the statements before... Why don't you
follow the advices I am going to give you?
The
actual curriculum of Primary Education is based on the acquisition of
competences, not being the contents the only thing considered. Attending to
this specification and trying to make the learning process enjoyable for the
student we have a really new method discovered which is the...
"GAMIFICATION".
If we
want to be active teachers, help our students to learn and be motivated... we
should use new methodologies and promote the cooperative work in the classroom.
Through this new method, the gamification, we apply the
digital games in the classroom to delevop the subject (without considering the
subject as a game, that means using games to carry out the subject)
Gamification
is starting to be a really common method in the schools. Since the technology
has arrived to our lifes, we cannot live without them. Students are addicted
and spend most of their day with these ITC decives.. Why
don't we bring the technology to our class to make students learn in a
real-world context and with items of their reality?
Now,
and as a way to facilitate you resources to work with the gamification
methodology to improve our students abilities in geometry, I am going to do a
TOP 5 useful games:
1. knowre: It is a platform
which includes challenges of geometry to compliment the classes for Primary
teachers & students.

2. Cerebriti: It is a platform
in which teachers or students can create game or play games previously created
by other people. It allows them to practice will they play.
3. El rey de las matemáticas: In this game
students have to answer some challenges to improve and go up in levels until
reach the end. It is not specific for geometry, but it includes challenges of
it.
4. Angry Birds: Something as
simple as the angry birds game can help you to explain student geometrical
figures. Moreover, you can explain them the dimensions using the different
tipologies of the game.
5. GeoCraft: It is an idea
developed in Spain. With a mixture of Minecraft and the possibilities in the
citites, children will work with geometrical forms and the representantion of
these forms in the city, making it with a real context according to their
surroundings.
Those
are just ideas to work in the classroom and improve children's knowledge about
Geometry....
Why don't you try to apply it in your classes?
